WILLIAM “THE BLOODY” PRATT
IN-CHARACTER
•••••••••••••••••••••
FULL NAME: William Pratt
NICKNAMES: Spike, William the Bloody
DATE OF BIRTH: November 18th
AGE: 126
SPECIES: Vampire
ABILITIES: As a vampire, Spike has the enhanced speed and strength that comes with it. Along with what he's built up through combat. He is faster and stronger than humans, aside from the slayer (although he has taken out two). Being undead, there are few ways to truly kill him; a wooden stake to the heart and decapitation does the trick, as does the sun. From injuries, he has an enhanced healing rate—small wounds especially heal fast.
FANDOM: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
PERSONALITY:Spike is a demon without rules; the way a vampire should be (or so he considers). The rock and roll of the vampire world, Spike has a blatant disregard for anyone’s rules except for his own—and even those are subject to change on a whim. Often unpredictable, it is perfectly safe to assume that he is out for himself a majority of the time. He likes to serve his own agenda and while it often leads him to side with opposite of the goody-good troop, he isn’t at all bound to it. Even intentions that an unsuspecting bystander would consider good often mask a hidden agenda. He has no interest in being good, or joining a fight against evil. It is almost always about his wants and how he can better attain them, regardless of his methods. He’s a hard man to read for that reason, often leaving what side he is on questionable. Though, he couldn’t care less about whether or not someone can read him correctly. After all, it isn’t about them. The truth is: he is on his own side. That’s good enough. But, as self-centred as he can be, he does possess the capacity for love and devotion. He doesn’t need a soul to dictate the more human emotion. Like most vampires do, Spike pulled a 180 after he was sired. Yet, the ability to love and to love strongly stayed with him. His ideas of devotion and honour are most notably represented in his century long relationship with Drusilla. Immediately, she was coined his destiny and as dead as his heart was, she had it. She brings out the protective, compassionate nature in him and the desire to protect. Together, the two are undead representations that love and evil are not exclusive of eachother. In fact, they blend quite flawlessly. Of course, in finding a love that strong, Spike is also prone to heartbreak. Love and women might just be the bane of his existence, but it’s not an aspect he’s sought to change either.
A bit of a pleasure-seeker, Spike is impulsive and reckless. Along with his go-getter personality, he drives after a rush. He acts on what he wants and violence is common. To him, killing and violence is a sport. There is an indescribable rush presented with acts of violence. It isn’t about necessity or a twisted art form. In fact, fighting is often more cathartic than anything. A grim mood can be righted through aggression, often leading him to feel better after a fight. Challenges, especially, are a prospect that he chases down with enthusiasm. If the odds are stacked against him, it only drives him further to win, rather than to contemplate backing down. He throws himself into fights without half a thought. It hasn’t been without success, however. Spike’s reputation is half based on his ability to rush into a fight and to make it out with success. One of the better rushes, he’s found, is in fighting slayers, of which he has killed two. Upon finding out what a slayer was, his intent was immediately to find one and to take her out himself. He feeds off the challenge and doesn’t back down. And while he amazingly gets out of scrapes, the vampire has also found himself in countless questionable situations that he barely made it out of. All of that impulsive violence shouldn’t be mistaken for stupidity however. Spike is intelligent and skilled with the ability to plan and plenty of insight. Unfortunately, planning and scheming can often take too long. Patience is the farthest thing from a virtue that he owns. He likes instant gratification and doesn’t care to wait unless he absolutely has to. It’s easy to bore him and drawn out plans are often switched out for something quicker and effective.
Holding him back is difficult due to his stubborn and determined personality. He hates to be detained and is hard to sway once he is after something specific. Spike can maneuver himself around in a situation and won’t be kept from his goal. Hell, even the sun is looked at as an inconvenience and an obstacle to the vampire. It hasn’t stopped him from his various trips with the windows of his car blacked out, or travelling with various materials (a blanket/tarp/etc.) covering his body to reduce the effects of the sun. Submission just isn’t in his vocabulary. In being so unwavering, Spike has developed the ability to bounce back from almost anything. While he can be taken out for periods of time, if something is important enough to him, it is guaranteed that he’ll wind up chasing it again. Spike doesn’t just back off.
And he must be doing something right, because he’s still around and as loud in personality as he ever has been. Integrated into modern culture, for as long as Spike has been around, he is incredibly blended into the world. He likes the world and all of the different parts of it. From cigarettes, to onion blossoms and a preference for classic punk, Spike takes part in a lot of human activity. He’s a big fan of popular culture, often able to quote films, television shows and a variety of music and literature. Living forever wouldn’t be half as fun if he wasn’t in the world really. He likes the way things are, not out for a big change. As much as he likes to cut a chaotic, bloody swath through cities, he wouldn’t want the entire world to be swept in that kind of chaos. Spike’s attention span wouldn’t tolerate that. Even he believes in moderation. He’s the type of guy that makes more enemies or rivals above friends. He is fast to banter and holds his own easily in a conversation. His speech is often filled with slang and pet names thrown around like candy. He has a semi-dry and sarcastic sense of humour half the time and doesn’t bother with politeness or political correctness when he speaks. He says what’s on his mind, no matter how abrasive or how much the other person doesn’t want to hear it. Not everyone is so keen on it, but again, he doesn’t care. With other people, he can be incredibly insightful, often lending a hand in manipulation or even the rare cases where he actually helps someone. Unfortunately, that doesn’t carry so well over to himself. As insightful as he is with others, he can be downright oblivious to what happens to himself.
HISTORY:Born in the nineteenth century, William was in his twenties when the year 1880 came around. His family was small, only him and his mother. His mother’s world, she doted upon him even as he grew older. A struggling poet, the young male had made himself known to be awful, awful enough to warrant comments about people preferring railroad spikes through their heads and tossing the name “William the Bloody” for being so bloody awful at him. On one solitary night in 1880, Spike’s poetry was forcefully read to a group of people for him to be mocked and laughed at. A the time, he had his eyes set on Cecily Adams and when confronted about whether or not the poems were meant for her, he admitted that they were and was coldly turned down, leaving the man heartbroken.
Hurt by the encounter, he’d fled, only to catch the eye of another woman. William’s salvation came that night in the form of a female vampire. Consoled by her words, his destiny began with Drusilla’s approach. After their share of dialogue, the bite took place, followed by the drink that would turn William into a member of the undead. After the demon was awakened, however, William revealed the first proof that he wasn’t quite like other vampires. Despite being soulless, his love for his mother hadn’t faded. The woman was dying of Tuberculosis and William thought to save her, even to his sire’s dismay. He abruptly sired his own mother to give her eternal life. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was that the demon that set up shop in her body was going to be nothing like her. Verbally, she attacked her son, denouncing him and going far enough to claim that he wanted to sleep with her. After attempting to shag her own son, William plunged a stake through her heart, unable to witness his mother in that fashion any longer.
So, began a turning point for him. A whole new world had opened up and Spike embraced it like an addiction. Impulsively violent, he discovered an amusement and thrill out of a challenge. The rush that came from the fight and the kill drove many of his actions. He remained with Drusilla, still completely in love with her with claims that she was his destiny; his salvation. Not alone, however, the pair remained with Darla and Angelus, completing their family, so to speak. From the start, his interaction with Angelus himself was complicated. There was a mentorship, rivalry, annoyance and some odd friendship thrown in for fun. Drusilla was often a subject that led Spike to resentment, since her relationship with Angelus hadn’t changed despite Spike wanting her to himself. Spike’s own carelessness also caused the two to clash quite often. All in all, that rivalry and banter didn’t disappear.
The world could surely thank the men and women who ridiculed the poet before for both name and action he took against his victims. The name Spike itself stemmed from the trademark he started with the victims he tortured and killed with railroad spikes. And after his change into a member of the undead, the name William the Bloody took on a more frightening connotation. The group travelled through Europe and Asia., reigning terror. Spike continued to plunge into violence and faced challenges head on. He cared about the risk, but the higher it was, the better the rush. He didn’t step down or spend time calculating before he made a move. The vampire’s patience often wore out if the plan was too elaborate. His reckless behaviour, however, often put the entire group in danger. Even so, it didn’t stop him. He was a vampire, and it was how they should live. In an attempt to deter him from it, not only did Angelus threaten his life but attempted to warn him of the slayer. Instead of frightening him, however, the story of a slayer only managed to make him determined to find one. In 1900, he had his first run-in with the chosen one during the Boxer Rebellion in China. It was a fight that would lead to her death, one that Spike prized.
Eventually, Spike and Drusilla parted ways with the rest of the group. Chaos and destruction still lay in their wake, with no sign of stopping. By World War II, the pair had been apart for a short time and Spike wound up captured by a Nazi submarine, along with a group of other vampires that they planned to use to create a super race of soldiers. When the American’s took over the submarine, however, the vampires got free and began to slaughter the crew. The distress of the soldiers forced the American military to gather help from an undead member of society. The feeding party was interrupted by a familiar face; none other than Angel himself. He managed to save the as many humans as he could to raise the submarine out of the water again. When the submarine hit surface, Spike and the vampire that Angel had sired to save them all were the only other two vampires left. At that point, Spike himself was forced to go and did. Back with Drusilla again, the pair continued to travel, hitting Italy sometime in the fifties and otherwise living their unlives.
The late seventies marked another milestone in Spike’s history, however, one that he would savour for years to come. Nikki Woods. The second slayer for him to come across came in New York City. Spike didn’t waste time in facing off against her. While he didn’t kill her right away, their confrontation gave him that familiar adrenaline rush that he sought to exploit. On a subway train, Spike finally finished her off. After the fight was finished, he even removed the slayer’s leather duster and wore it as a prize for the next couple of decades. It was a prized moment, and that coat symbolized it, not to mention, it really was a great coat. His next encounter wouldn’t come until the late nineties when he made his little trip to the Hellmouth.
After a mob attack in Prague left Drusilla badly injured, the couple made their way to Sunnydale. Dedicated to taking care of and saving her, Spike believed that the Hellmouth would help restore her strength again. The two rocked into Sunnydale and Spike immediately took over the Anointed one’s mission to destroy the slayer. Unable to wait, however, Spike led a group of vampires against the slayer during Parents’ Night at the local high school. The attempt was a failure and ruined the group’s plans. Deciding that he wasn’t there to listen or put his life on the line for someone else, Spike killed the anointed one and took over the factory with Drusilla. Still intent on finding the cure, Spike remained a threat to the slayer and her friends as he searched. Eventually, he understood the ritual and discovered the blood needed for it belonged to Drusilla’s sire, Angel. In order to restore her strength, Spike had Angel captured and brought him back to the factory. Spike managed to carry out the ceremony, however, the interruption of the Scoobies to save the ensouled vampire left Angel alive and Spike paralyzed and burned. However, Drusilla’s stength was restored.
The two made it out alive, despite Buffy crashing their party. It wasn’t over then, either. While Spike had a mind to leave and find some place better, Drusilla had wanted to remain in Sunnydale. So, the two planned their revenge along with the end of the world. Together, they rebuilt a demon known as the Judge; a creature that couldn’t be killed by any weapon forge and that would burn the humanity out of someone. The two managed to bring him back to life, even with the attempts to stop them. After he was risen, Angel simultaneously lost his soul and joined the pair. At first thrilled to have him on their side, Spike’s views on Angelus quickly shifted. Their Judge plot was handed back to them by Buffy and her gang, and after that point, Angelus’ idea to suck the world into Hell roused. Of course, Drusilla was all for it and Spike pretended to be behind it, although having an end to the world wasn’t in his vision. And neither was having Angelus continue his relationship with Drusilla.
When it came to planning, Spike had always been an impatient one. He became bored easily and didn’t always carry through with said plots. This time, however, Spike revealed his ability to be patient when the right plan presented itself. Healed from his paralysis, the vampire pretended to be stuck in the wheelchair after he would’ve been abl.e to walk again. He never planned to go along with Angelus’ plot to awaken the demon Acathla and as the time grew closer, he started to shove his plans into motion. After Angelus’ attempt to awaken the demon failed and he sought out Rupert Giles to torture for information, Spike decided it was time to end it. At that point, he made a decision that he would’ve never seen himself making in the past.
He went to the slayer for help. He couldn’t stop it on his own, but neither could she. In exchange for a safe retreat from Sunnydale with Drusilla, Spike promised that Giles would stay alive and that he would help her in her fight to stop Angelus. Despite a serious lack of trust, Buffy agreed to it. When Spike returned to the pair, he managed to keep Giles alive and pretended to be behind his undead counterparts all the way down to the last second. Before Angelus could remove the sword that would awaken the demon, Buffy arrived ready to attack and much to the surprise of the other two, Spike sprang into action to help. He never managed to watch the fight come to an end, however. Instead, he fought Drusilla and took her with him away from Sunnydale.
The two made it to South America, but after his actions his relationship had become severely strained. Drusilla claimed he’d gone soft and that he wasn’t demon enough for her. Naturally, Spike disagreed and when Dru offered to stay friends, Spike was insulted by the offer and more hurt by the whole thing. Hurt, he fled South America and went to Sunnydale to right things. Sadly, that included rolling into Sunnydale as a heartbroken drunk. Once back in town, hearing of Willow’s ability to do a love spell, Spike decided that that was his way to win Drusilla back. So, he kidnapped both Willow and Xander to force Willow to do the spell for him. In need of more items for the spell, however, Spike left and wound up having a heart to heart with Buffy’s mother Joyce before Angel and Buffy swooped in to save the day. With her friends on the line, Buffy and Angel decided to help Spike get what he needed to ensure that her friends would get away safely. After an attack, however, Spike had a change of heart and decided to get Drusilla back in a blunt, violent way to make her love him again.
Again, it didn’t work out for him. And the second time around, Spike headed back to Sunnydale with a different intent in mind: The Gem of Amarra. Alongside a new vampire named Harmony that he’d sprung up a relationship with, Spike went in search of a ring that would offer immunity to the normal ways to kill a vampire. Initially, Harmony found it and Spike discovered that she had after an attempt to stake the blonde woman. She wasn’t interested in keeping it though and handed it over to Spike as soon as he wanted it. Unfortunately, for Spike, his success was shortlived after a fight with Buffy put the ring in her hands instead. Then, much to his dismay she had it sent to LA to Angel.
Spike followed it, of course, and attacked Angel to find out it’s location. Since Angel made a point to hide the ring, Spike enlisted the help of a vampire named Marcus to torture Angel until he gave up the information. While Marcus tortured the ensouled vampire, Spike sought out Angel’s place and looked for it without success. After meeting with Angel’s team, Cordelia and Doyle, however, Spike struck a deal with the pair to find him the ring and give it to him in exchange for Angel’s life. The two did manage to find it and complied with the terms, but before Spike could go back on his deal to keep Angel alive, Oz arrived to help save Angel. While Angel was rescued, Marcus betrayed Spike and took the ring for himself. Annoyed with his own failure, Spike left Los Angeles.
Intent to kill Buffy again, Spike returned to Sunnydale. The Gem of Amarra was a minor setback and Spike figured he’d be able to accomplish it without the little trinket. He had barely arrived back on the Hellmouth when he wasn’t anymore. One moment, he was busy lurking in the shadows, plotting out the slayer’s terrible death, and the next, when he thought he was dishing out his evil schemes to the empty air where Buffy once was, he was gone.
ROLEPLAY SAMPLE:There was very little that could successfully quiet Spike. He seldom went speechless and he doubted anything that Xander could say would ever bring about anything other than quick remarks. And since he managed to win himself a chip, Spike had felt more than talkative—except for where actual information was concerned. When it came to important matters, he was easy to quiet on that subject. But, really, he was just preserving himself. As long as he had something that they needed, they weren't going to shove a stake through him. Spike would go a long way for self-preservation, despite how he put himself into situations to get himself killed 9 times out of 10. He was reckless, impulsive and liked a challenge that required real fighting. Close calls were nothing new, but Spike wasn't a moron. He wasn't going to get himself into a fight when he couldn't lift a hand to defend himself without a mind splitting headache. His quit threshold might have been harder to catch up to than most, but he didn't have any will to be dust. But, by the time he was through here, Spike didn't know that he would be feeling differently about that. There were worse things than being dust. This was probably one of them, but he intended to find a way to get that chip out and as soon as he did, well, then he would take his place as their enemy again. He wasn't an ally necessarily now, but he wasn't considered a threat, so did that really classify as enemy? The peroxide blonde still hated them. And being around Xander kind of reasserted that fact.
Although it was impossible for Spike to forget that the chip was there, having it waved in his face consistently bothered him. Clenching his jaw for a moment, he smirked sardonically. "How good of you to notice, Sergeant Inadequate." He said, mock saluting the brunette. Life wasn't much else lately. The more he considered what he turned out to be, the more he felt the nostalgia creeping in on him. Months ago, everything had been fine and Sunnydale was nothing short of cursed for the chipped vampire. But, he kept coming back, because that slayer needed to be finished off. It would keep egging at him until it was finished. He didn't know that any other slayer had ever infuriated him as much as Buffy. He was never beat so many times over. Spike would have been happy to give up on it a year and a half ago when he left Sunnydale with Dru. Actually, if he wanted to be specific, he could always pin the blame on Drusilla for all of this. She was the one so hell bent on thinking that he was obsessed with Buffy. He wasn't. And if she would stop dumping him for disgusting demons because of it, then he wouldn't have had to come back to Sunnydale at all. He refused to think he would have either. She was out of her mind to think that his head was full of the slayer even in the least—well, she was, but even more so with that line of thought. It was one of the only times that he really considered her to be wrong. Because, she might have been insane, but she was never off. For Spike, the best branch to take was to play on Xander's apparent uselessness to the group. If he wanted to remind him of the chip, then he would remind him that he didn't necessarily have a sturdy place in the scooby gang. "And how are you doing these days? Hit your quota of witty remarks with the gang today? Or are they off, y'know, living their lives without you again?" Spike had absolutely no room to talk, but it didn't stop him. And as far as he saw it, Xander was stuck in that basement same as him. Only, he had to pay for it.
"It's not my fault, she's the one interesting person you've got around." Spike shrugged, as if that made it all right for him to be interested. If anything, that glare had only amused him. And he chuckled, not about to lose interest because Xander didn't want him to. If it bothered him, then all the better. He wasn't there to make life easier for him, after all. "I certainly don't mind her stopping in." A little grin appeared on his face with the comment, hoping that Xander could take it several different ways. Spike couldn't even refrain from rolling his eyes at the blood comment. He was a vampire, it was what he did. It wasn't his fault that he couldn't go out getting his own. Spike didn't have cash, or the ability to harm humans to get it for himself. Plus, wandering around out right now was a bit dangerous for him. Honestly, he would much rather have human than pig's blood. "Yeah, just really hits the bloody spot." He grumbled. "But, if you'd like to kick over any time soon, I'm pretty sure I could make do with you." Spike figured he could feed off of someone when they were dead, but the idea of scavenging for bodies or stalking other vampires for food wasn't at all appealing. It was a little humiliating. He had been desperate enough to want Harmony to get him something, but she was out of the picture again. Not that it bothered him any, she was good for just about one thing. Dealing with not having blood wasn't what he wanted to do, but he took the answer for now and leaned back heavily in the chair.
