The worst thing about landing in this world with nothing but the clothes on his back was not that he was in another world – Billy had never much liked his, anyway – or that he didn’t know where this place was or how it worked, or that he’d had to leave behind his work as Doctor Horrible, or that he couldn’t go and do laundry and eat frozen yoghurt and wish that Penny would notice him as more than just her laundry buddy, it was that he didn’t have his super-villain outfit. Actually, the worst thing was that Penny wasn’t here (especially since Captain Hammer wasn’t here; Billy thought he stood a much better chance without that tool around), because he missed her every second, and every time he walked round a corner, taking the time to inspect this place he was in, Billy hoped that he’d see her on the other side of the road, trying to collect signatures for another petition. There might not have been electricity here, and he’d come across some really strange people so far, but Billy was sure there would be homeless people here too. There always were. Of course, the things that Penny had been trying to do, getting a new building and everything, they wouldn’t solve the problem, because it had to be stopped at the source, but he’d have done anything to see her there, petitioning away. It might have made him feel better; maybe it was silly, but without his outfit, he was just Billy, the nobody that got ignored by everyone, including the girl he loved. Until he found somewhere to source a new one, and to get some more goggles, and gloves...Billy was a nobody. And he hated being a nobody; they achieved nothing, and he wanted to achieve everything. This was a new world, with new rules, but at the end of the day, it was still a society. Societies needed change, and they needed someone to lead that change. And Billy was going to make damn sure it wasn’t another corporate ‘hero’; as soon as he could slip on his mask again, it was going to be him. Doctor Horrible, the king. He smirked; it sounded perfect.
He thought he had a while to go before then, though; Doctor Horrible needed to establish himself in this place, build himself a reputation – and some weapons too. That would be interesting, given that Billy hadn’t yet seen any signs of electricity anywhere, and how would he do his blog without the internet? He’d spent years analysing the social structure of the world, marking the things that needed to be changed (all of it) with bright yellow highlighter in his mind. And he’d have to work out which were the important buildings here, who ran this town, so that he could get blueprints and plan his heists...what if they didn’t have blueprints? Doctor Horrible had a formula, a formula that worked, and it had taken him years to build up to where he was now, a real-life super-villain, fighting the pathetic tools of capitalism with his superior weaponry and intelligence, while they could only use their fists. Fists that pummelled him into the ground regularly, and could dislocate his shoulder without breaking a sweat and threw cars at his head...So, yes, anyway! It was going to take him a while to sort things out. Once he had his lab coat, though, he could be Doctor Horrible again, pacing the streets and planning what he would change when he ruled this world; if it wasn’t for the absence of Penny, he would have had no desires to go back. One world was as good as the next, and at least he didn’t have a nemesis here. Or a sidekick. Hm, actually, he needed a sidekick. He kinda missed his Moist buddy, although it would be nice to have dry mail for a change...if he got mail here. Which was unlikely, since he didn’t know anybody. That would change when he started planning to take over the world again. But for now—now he was just jeans-and-a-hoody Billy.
Billy kept his head down as he walked along the streets, hands deep into his pockets. He missed his iPhone, the gadgets he had on there making his life a whole lot easier; how was he going to create weapons without his laboratory, or his remote control equipment, or even the basis of his Freeze Ray that had taken him months to perfect? He’d have to start from scratch, and it would be harder this time, being in a different world. Billy sighed; at least it wasn’t raining. Having come from a city where it barely rained, he would have hated to be here and spend his time getting soaked. He peered up at the sky just in case, squinting against the sun, but thought it was cloudy, he didn’t think there was any chance of rainfall. Though he was keeping his head down, doing his usual trick of making himself seem as invisible as possible – sure, it was a little lonely, especially now that he didn’t have Penny or Moist to talk to, but it was how it had always been; Billy didn’t expect anything different of his life – Billy was keeping note of which stores he passed. Unless he got poofed back home just as suddenly as he’d got here (now, if he could invent a ray that could do that, that would be awesome), at some point or other, he was going to need to go into all of them. Billy was so intent on the ground beneath his feet that he barely noticed when he walked right into someone, muttering, “Sorry,” as he carried on walking away; if they were mad enough to want to talk to someone like him, they’d call back. Otherwise, he could carry on where he was going – he was pretty sure there was a tailor’s round here, if he remembered correctly from one of his earlier wanders round the town. And tailors could make anything you wanted; Billy needed a coat.
